Weekend Kayaking on the Väliväylä Route
On a two-day, one-night trip, the starting point is Röllänranta in Tirva, with an overnight stay at Mankin Tupa (pictured). The extra day allows for a longer river journey, beautiful natural scenery, and peaceful rural landscapes. There are no official rest areas between Röllänranta and Mankin Tupa, so it’s recommended to pack snacks that can be eaten in the kayak.
Example of a two-day trip:
- Röllänranta (Tirva rest area) – Mankin Tupa, approx. 7.5 km
- Mankin Tupa – Käyrälammi, 14.5 km, including one portage and two rapids
For a three-day, two-night trip, the starting point is Kannuskoski, which has a good launching area. During the three-day trip, you’ll experience rapids of varying difficulty, peaceful river sections, and scenic landscapes. Between Immasenjärvi and Tirvanjärvi, you can also sense the area’s history — the Väliväylä was once a timber-floating route that connected the Saimaa water system to the Kymi River. Timber floating along the route ended in 1963.
Possible starting sections for the three-day trip include:
- Kannuskoski – Taikinakoski, approx. 9 km, including four rapids (Niskakoski, Kyykoski, Sulunkoski, and Myllykoski), some of which can be bypassed by portaging.
- Taikinakoski – Mankin Tupa, approx. 14 km, including two rapids (Pajukoski / Tirvankoski) and one portage (around the Pajukoski dam).
- Mankin Tupa – Käyrälammi, approx. 14.5 km, including one portage (Jyräänkoski) and two rapids (Paaskoski and Immaistenkoski).
